Irazu Volcano National Park - Go Among Costa Rican Volcanoes At Time of Entertainment

Here at the top of Costa Rica’s tallest volcano, the main crater looks like it was struck by a gigantic meteorite that Irazu Volcano vaporized on impact, leaving behind a semi-spherical blast zone.
It’s an awe-inspiring sight, as long as you’re not expecting to see the gorgeous emerald crater lake that appears in most  Irazu Volcano photos — it dried up three years ago.

The Complete Guide to Irazu Volcano

Irazu Volcano in Costa Rica is a great day trip option from San Jose. I mean how often do you get the chance to explore the top of a volcano while in a foreign country? This complete guide to Irazu volcano covers all we’ve learned from our multiple visits to this special place.

Like Poás Volcano National Park in Alajuela, Irazú is an easy drive on paved roads from the Central Valley. Unlike Poás, it lacks the extensive trails through an eerie cloud forest and the museum explaining the geology and natural history.

The Irazu is one of the most beautiful volcanoes that we have, but more than that, it also has a breathtaking route in. The landscapes you see en route to Irazu happen to be, probably, the most beautiful throughout the Central Valley (If not from the whole country) and it is a great introduction to the history and culture of Costa Rica, being in one of the less touched environments touristically speaking.

At this time the clouds usually haven’t rolled in yet. If the Irazu volcano is clouded in there is no point of visiting. You won’t be able to see almost anything. You can ask when you pay if the volcano is clear. If you can opt to do one of our nearby Irazu volcano suggest activities at the end of this post.
